Matricaria 'Cameron' (sometimes sold as Tanacetum parthenium 'Cameron') is a well-known, highly productive cut flower with tall, single-flowered stems. It has bright white petals and a yellow centre.

Scientific Name: Tanacetum parthenium (formerly Matricaria parthenium).
Common Names: Feverfew, Matricaria, Double Feverfew.
Type: Short-lived perennial, often grown as an annual in Australia.
Flowers: Tall and airy, single-flowered stems with bright white petals and a yellow centre.

Seed Depth: Seeds need light to germinate. Scatter them on the surface and press them gently into the soil; do not bury them.

Germination: Takes 7–14 days at 18–25°C

Transplanting: Once seedlings have their first true leaves, transplant them to their final position.

Pinching: Pinch out the growing tips when plants are about 15cm tall to encourage bushy growth and more flowering stems.

Deadheading: Regularly pick flowers to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.

Harvest: For cut flowers, harvest when the outer petals are fully open. The stems are long and sturdy, making them excellent for bouquets.
Powdery Mildew: This is the biggest risk in humid coastal QLD.

Solution: Choose a sunny, airy spot. Avoid overhead watering. If mildew appears, remove affected leaves and use a sulfur-based fungicide or organic spray.

Heat Stress: If sown too late or in a hot summer, plants may bolt (flower prematurely) or wilt. Stick to the autumn/winter sowing window for the best results.

Aphids: These pests are common on new growth in warm weather.

Solution: Blast them off with a hose or use an insecticidal soap.
Because Tanacetum parthenium prefers cooler weather and can suffer in the intense Queensland summer heat and humidity, timing is critical.

Subtropical QLD (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba):

Sow: March to July (Autumn to mid-Winter).

Why: Sowing in autumn/winter allows the plants to establish and flower during the cooler, drier months (August–November). Avoid sowing in the peak of summer (Dec–Feb) as high humidity can cause fungal issues like powdery mildew.

Tropical QLD (Cairns, Townsville, Far North):

Sow: April to June (Start of the dry season).

Why: These plants struggle in the wet season. Planting as the rains end ensures they mature in the pleasant, dry winter months.

Arid/Inland QLD:

Sow: July to October (Spring).
Sun: Requires full sun for the best flower production and strongest stems.

Soil: Prefers well-drained soil. It is adaptable and can grow in poor soils but performs best with some organic matter.

Tip: In QLD's heavy clay soils, amend with sand or gypsum to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist while seedlings are establishing. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant but will produce more flowers with regular watering.

Crucial: Water at the base to keep foliage dry. Wet leaves in QLD's humidity invite mildew.

Spacing: Space plants 30–40cm apart to ensure good airflow.

Height: Grows to 70–90cm tall.

Flowering: Flowers appear 70–80 days after transplanting. In QLD, this usually means a display from late winter through spring (August to November).
